Repost from @sean_davey from the #HotButteredProJunior at #Narrabeen back in January of '92. @shanedorian and I made the finals against an almost all Australian cast. No American had ever won the event before. To celebrate, Shane and I made a pact to surf switchfoot on our first wave (an agreement we've kept in most of the heats we've surfed together since then including a final at #Teahupoo in 2000). Little did we know, #TerryFitzgerald, Event Director and menacing character to us groms, was fuming on the beach and nearly grabbed a board and paddled out to come strangle us, seeing the act as a cocky joke on the Aussies. That never crossed our minds but had we surfed the whole heat like that he probably would have. We were just stoked to make the final together. I turned 20 a month later and Shane a few months after that so it was our one chance at winning the 19 and under event. We called #ToddChesser on a friend's cell phone from the podium to share the news, the first time I ever called overseas on a cell phone. Back then there was no press or social media and you might have to wait weeks to know results of contests so I always called home to let my mom or friends know how I had done. Random thoughts today after seeing this pic. Thanks for the photo! And thanks for reading.
